After Effects is a computer software program by Adobe that allows artists to use tools and concepts that were originally developed for still image manipulation to creat video and digital animation. Adobe has been successfull at identifying and purchasing start up companies with key art and design software assets. They have developed an impressive suite of multimedia authoring tools. Adobe Photoshop has become a standard for still image editing. Adobe Illustrator is invaluble for creating line art and scalable vector graphics. Adobe Premiere is a respected digital video editor. Adobe has made a point of providing ease of use by developing the package to allow easy transfer of files between programs. This allows artists with different specialties an opurtunity to venture into other media. Great stuff. Adobe After Effects is a wonderful example of this integrated philosophy. An artist can literally "drag and drop" a multilayered Photoshop document into After Effects and animate filter effects, movement, scale, opacity etc. of each layer. The genius of After Effects is that it thinks like a still image editor but with scripts or actions it can be automated to create a series of images that can be played as a video or animation. This is the heart of motion graphics, the concept that a motion picture is a series of still frames that can be manipulated exhaustively using 2d graphics techniques. This use of scripting originates from the vanguard artists who hand coded Applescript and the people who created Quicktime but Adobe After Effects makes it easier than ever to create complex animations that integrate photos, graphics, and video into a finished product.
