This style of bead known today as an *eye bead* has ancient origins and is believed to have been discovered and popularized by many different bead cultures. The eye motif is sometimes associated with myth and tradition regarding spirits and curses. Many cultures regard the eye as a watchful protector which wards off evil spirits and manifestations.
I prefer to think of the eye as happy aquaintance whose company I enjoy.
