am writing and recording with a desk top computer set up as a digital
audio workstation. The songs are recorded with a combination of programs,
and mixed down to wav files.
The
wav file format is ideal for burning CD's but it is too large for distributing
through the web. A 3 min .wav file at CD quality is about 30Mb.
Recent
improvements in mp3 sound file compression technology allow the creation
of files that feature excellent sound quality and a relatively small file
size. Wav files can be compressed to 1/10th or more the original size
as mp3 files and still sound the equal of a CD. A 3 min mp3 at CD quality
is only 3Mb.
The
widespread availability of free mp3 players makes the exchange of sound
and music thru the web a very exciting reality.
The mp3 file format requires a special player and you will find many offered
free for download at sites all around the world.
