Swapping Targa file
skins is easy if you know how the Boarder Zone file structure is laid
out. The info below may help you choose the Graphics settings that work
best with the custom skins you collect. It is best to only swap texture
maps of matching resolution and color depth but the game seems pretty
tolerant of mismatches. I have success with using higher resolution skins
on my favorite character by placing the hi res files of specific items
into the relative lores directory.
|
Boarder Zone offers
a choice of Graphics settings in the Options Menu. Each of the 4 Resolution
choices employs only a few of the files found in each Characters folder.
Here is a view of the file structure within the Aikiko Character directory.
The Akiko directory is divided into 4 subdirectoies:
hires
meres
lores
vlores
this subdirectory structure is used through out the Boarder Zone game
and relates to the choices you have in the Graphics section of the Options
Menu.
The basic Graphics Options are choosen under the Graphics Detail section.
The choices are:
Very High Quality_____uses the hires data
High Quality_________uses the meres data
Standard___________uses the lores data
Low_______________uses the vlores data
Custom................see below

Custom Graphics Options
settings:
the custom menu has two categories:
Texture Resolution which is similar to the Graphics Detail choices but
specifically determines the pixel dimensions of the texture maps that
will be used and
Texture Quality which relates to color bit depth choices.
The Resolution choice selects which level of __res directories will be
used during game play. Each __res directory includes a paired set of 24kbit
and 256bit texture maps. The pixel dimensions or resolution of each pair
of texture maps match regardless of color depth Quality.
The Resolution choices are:
Very High Quality_____uses the hires data
High Quality_________uses the meres data
Standard___________uses the lores data
Low_______________uses the vlores data
The Quality choices are:
24 bit Best____________uses the 24bit subdirectories
16 bit Standard________uses the 24bit subdirectories
8 bit Low_____________uses the 256 subdirectories
Compressed__________uses the 256 subdirectories
I have included this table to help you visualize the real behind the scene
differences in the choices you can make. This should be especially interesting
to Gamers who want to mix and match Resolutions for maximum efficiency
and super graphics. I have been weighting the data load on the game by
using hires skins on my rider and lores skins on the competition. You
can also see that some items such as the __bind.tga files are larger than
seems neccessary. It is tempting to use the lowest res binding skin regardless
of the overall resolution setting.

notes:
All the targa image map in the game are square. The dimensions are
listed in pixels. For example the _jacket medium resolution targa
image is a square measuring 256x256 pixels.
The pixel dimensions are related to the resolution choice. The avg
data size is listed so that comparisons can be made if you are interested
in mixing and matching. |
